FLOOD alerts have been issued around the areas of Derwentwater and Windermere.

The Environment Agency says that flooding is possible along the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.

An update from the agency's flood information service stated: "Lake levels in Derwentwater remain high following rainfall over the previous days.

"The forecast is for the Lake levels to fall slowly throughout Saturday, December 8.

"Levels however will remain above Flood Alert throughout Saturday and into Sunday, December 9.

"Low lying areas will be affected around the lake."

The agency added that flooding is also possible along the Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster near Windermere.

"Lake levels at the Far Sawrey gauging station remain high as a result of rainfall over the last few days.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible.

"Flooding could affect low lying land and roads in the Langdale, Grasmere, Ambleside, Troutbeck, Windermere, Hawkshead, Rusland Valley, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cartmel, Cark and Winster Valley areas.

"High river and lake levels are possible on Great Langdale Beck, River Brathay, River Rothay, Trout Beck, Mill Beck, Cunsey Beck, Windermere Lake, Rusland Pool, River Eea, River Winster and their tributaries.

"We are closely monitoring the situation."

Motorists are advised to plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.
