A COCKERMOUTH man who wants to help the town council raise money for costly cenotaph repairs will be opening up his grand home during the festive season.
People can enjoy a tour of Bob Slack's historic house - The Fitz, on Low Road. They will also be treated to festive fizz and refreshments and be able to take part in a luxury raffle.
The war memorial - which includes an iconic bronze statue - was deemed unsafe earlier in the year and dismantled last month.
The statue has been taken away for specialist repair work, the plinth masonry will be repaired on site.
The work is expected to cost £114,000 and should be completed by the end of March. The town council was pleased to secure a grant of £17,000 from the War Memorials Trust, the remaining money will come from council funds.
"The work has to be done, we are grateful to Bob Slack for his support and will continue to try and raise as much money as possible," said clerk Sheila Brown.
Christmas at The Fitz will take place on Saturday, December 29, with tours at 5pm and 7.30pm. Tickets cost £20 with proceeds going towards cenotaph repairs.
