SIXTH formers at Cockermouth School held a cake sale to raise funds for and awareness of Brain Tumour Research and Macmillan Cancer Support.

They raised £200 for the charities which are being supported by town mayor David Malloy, whose wife, Lynn, is a catering assistant at the school.

A school spokesman said: "Holding the cake sale was the idea of Mim Pennington and Katie Beresford who are both members of the Student Management Team. They encouraged other students within the sixth form to contribute by baking and donating the cakes to sell at the cake sale."

The presented the money to the mayor and mayoress this week.

Councillor Malloy said: "Both our chosen charities are very close to our hearts. Sadly my wife Lynne was diagnosed with a brain tumour nine years ago, but thankfully now has the all clear. Raising money for them and Macmillan Cancer Support means that we can give something back to say thank you.”

Katie said: “As a community school we feel it is important to support the wider community and as the mayoress, Mrs Malloy, works in school, we were keen to offer our help in raising both funds and awareness of the mayor's charities.”
