The A595 at Muncaster is closed this morning due to a burst water main and flooding.

Cumbria Police received reports of the incident just after 6am. The road was closed at 7:10am.

United Utilities engineers are liaising with police about reopening the road once the water main has been isolated.

The water company has said customers in Millom may have noticed that the water is coming out of the tap slower than usual or has gone off altogether.

It has five water-on-wheels tankers due to arrive, which will bring everyone back on their water supply

In a statement on its site, it said: "Our inspector is in the area carrying out investigations to identify the cause of some of you having no water or poor pressure.

"We apologise for the trouble this may be causing you this morning and we will update this message as soon as we know what the issue is."

Cumbria County Council recommend travellers use an alternative route of the M6 or the A591.

The body has also confirmed that Captain Shaw's CofE School is closed today due to the burst water main.

Copeland Council has been forced to cancel today's scheduled waste and recycling collections in south Copeland due to the road closure.

Refuse collections due today in the Muncaster, Bootle and Waberthwaite area will be completed on Monday.

Refuse and recycling collections due today in Millom and Haverigg will be completed tomorrow (Saturday).

A spokesman said: "We'd like to thank our residents for their patience."
