Cumbria Police is warning businesses to be vigilant following more reports of forged £50 notes being passed across the county.

In recent weeks, businesses, from newsagents to hotels, have been targeted, including reports in Coniston, Grasmere, Ulverston, Silloth, Allonby, Abbeytown and Carlisle.

Reports today have come from Ambleside, Grasmere and Workington, and concern a Clydesdale Bank £50 note.

Previous reports are of forged Scottish £20 and Irish £50 notes, however English denominations should also be checked with caution.

Crime prevention officer Claire Stevens, said: “We hope by continuing to highlight these incident that business will take heed in checking any £20 and £50 notes that they receive. Our advice is simple, if you are in any doubt, do not accept the tender and ask for other means of payment.”
