A MACHINE being used to knock down an old building at Carlisle hospital has become "unstable".

Hospital staff have confirmed that work is underway to ensure that the machinery, which is on the demolition site and therefore away from staff and visitors, can be stabilised.

A spokeswoman for North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We are currently dealing with an incident in which a machine within the demolition site of the tower block at the Cumberland Infirmary has become unstable and we are working to resolve this as soon as possible.

"No one has been hurt and there is no risk to the public. The surrounding area has been cordoned off.”

The tower block is being knocked down to make way for a new cancer centre.
