A Christmas campaign launched by a Whitehaven supermarket saw presents handed out to disadvantaged children.

Tesco, at Bransty Row, held a Christmas Tree Appeal, which allowed customers to buy gifts.

The annual scheme supports Howgill Family Centre, which works to improve the lives of children, families and their communities in Copeland.

Service and community manager Alison Hogge said there was an "overwhelming response".

"Our customers and colleagues picked a tag off our tree and bought a present for the name and age of the child on the tag.

"They then wrapped it up, stuck a tag on it and handed it in to us.

"We had over 30 trolley loads of gifts donated."

This year, the town's Tesco is also working closely with Whitehaven Community Trust to support young, homeless adults.

"We invited them in for a cooked breakfast earlier this month and gave them shopping to go away with," said Mrs Hogge.

"Tesco, in Whitehaven, is at the heart of the community, supporting wherever we can."

The store also donated Christmas lunch to the group.
