A parking overhaul across the Cockermouth area has taken a big step forward after county councillors agreed to endorse a raft of changes.

The Allerdale local committee has agreed to go to the next stage – statutory consultation and advertisement of the changes which will affect Cockermouth, Brigham and Embleton.

The highways working group’s recommendations – which follow a review of the traffic regulation order – were discussed at a meeting yesterday (January 9).

The recommendations include the following, with some adjusted slightly to take into account views from the public.

  • Derwent Street – “Keep clear” marking in place of disc parking.
  • Wakefield Road – “No waiting at any time” restrictions opposite the coach parking bay.
  • Brewery Lane – “No waiting at any time” restrictions on areas of the tight dead end road.
  • Low Road Close –“No waiting at any time” restrictions near the junction with Low Road in order to maintain access for large delivery vehicles to the nearby car garage.
  • Market Place – The original recommendation was to alter the existing loading bay to allow for loading from 8 am – 12 pm with disc parking from 12 pm – 6 pm. One objection was received objecting to the change because deliveries are required throughout the day. Because of his, it has been recommended to split the bay into two sections, with a small area being retained as “loading only”.
  • Sullart Street – “No waiting at any time” restrictions at the south end of Sullart Street to prevent obstruction of the nearby access.
  • Bridekirk Dovenby School – To introduce “school keep clear” markings at the access to the school, as well as “no waiting at any time” restrictions on the nearby junction.
  • Paddle School – To introduce both “school keep clear restrictions” and “no waiting at any time” outside the school.
  • Main Street – To move loading, disabled and disc parking to “more appropriate locations”, and to introduce “no loading at any time” restrictions at places affected by regular obstructions
  • New Street, Derwent Street and Horsman Street – To introduce three short stretches of “no waiting at any time” in front of existing access points, plus a short stretch of disc parking.
  • Slatefell Drive – “School keep clear” markings.
  • Low Road, Brigham – Short stretch of “no waiting at any time” at an often-obstructed junction.
  • Marvejols Park, Cockermouth – To introduce “no waiting at any time” restrictions on two junctions.
  • Embleton access roads from the A66 – A width limit on Station Road where HGVs have been known to get stuck, and also on the nearby road leading to Embleton Spa.
  • Embleton Spa – A disabled bay above the Spa as well as “no waiting at any time” in the surrounding area.
  • Cockermouth Lonning, Brigham – “No waiting at any time” restrictions in the mouth of the junction to stop obstructions. Following correspondence with Brigham Parish Council, “school keep clear” markings and “no waiting at any time” restrictions are also proposed.
