A man who "struggled violently" against police officers has been fined by a court for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Arran Heslop, 20, of Cockfield Drive, Workington, pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened on a Mad Friday night out on Washington Street in Workington.

Prosecutor, Diane Jackson, outlined the events to the court.

At around 3am on December 22, Heslop approached police officers tending to an incident, and repeatedly ignored their instructions for him to move away. She said the defendant then became verbally abusive towards the officers and began lashing out at those around him.

Several members of the public were said to have been "visibly alarmed" by Heslop's actions, as he "struggled violently" with police when they tried to arrest him.

Defending himself, Heslop agreed that all of the events described by the prosecution did happen. He added: "I was trying to push forward because my friend got headbutted and he was bleeding from the nose. I was trying to help somebody."

Heslop was fined £115, on top of a £30 victim surcharge and an £85 court fee, amounting to a total bill of £230.
