A Workington man was shocked to discover in court that he had "shaken his genitals at police officers" on a Mad Friday night out.

Aaran Tierney pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk and disorderly behaviour he displayed on December 22, while on a night out on Washington Street in Workington.

Prosecutor, Diane Jackson, described the events to the court.

She said Tierney, 27, of Derwent Street, was approached by police officers at 3am for urinating against a building.

The defendant initially followed the officers' instructions to conceal himself, before removing his genitals from his trousers again and shaking them at the police officers whilst telling them, "I will get my [genitals] out for you."

The man was arrested moments later when he insulted a male officer.

Tierney, who appeared at West Cumbria Magistrates Court in Workington on Friday and chose to represent himself, said that he was "really shocked" to hear of his behaviour. He said, "I never flash anyone, I don't even flash my girlfriend."

He added, "I have no knowledge of it, it's news to me - I'm absolutely shocked." Tierney said he felt okay while in the pub, but the effect of the alcohol hit him when he stepped outside.

He told magistrates "I'm sorry. I'm really shocked, I didn't know I'd done any of that. I never flash anybody."

Tierney added he had been on medication which was giving him palpitations but he stopped taking it two days before the incident.

The court heard this was the second time the defendant was charged with being drunk and disorderly.

Tierney was fined £80 and was ordered to pay £85 court costs and £30 victim surcharge, amounting to a total bill of £195. The defendant asked for this to be taken off his benefits.
