Former SAS soldiers will give a talk in Maryport to tell their gripping tales of war.

Rusty Firmin and Phil Campion have decades of experience between them which they will chronicle on February 23.

Ticket proceeds will be donated to Pilgrim Bandits; a registered charity that gives opportunities to injured servicemen.

The charity provides training and activities to encourage injured veterans to carry on their personal growth, going by the mission statement: ‘Helping our injured forces go a little further’.

Bricktop Promotions are hosting the evening at Netherhall Rugby Club and boss Adrian Kirkbride said he is motivated to feature ex-servicemen as they are close to his heart.

“I’m ex-military myself and I can relate to what these boys have done,” he said. “It’s about getting the appreciation they deserve. The audience will get an idea of what Phil Campion and Rusty Firmin went through.”

The promoter, who also coaches as Nemesis Boxing Club, believes the Cumbrian audience will relate to the upbringing of Rusty Firmin who was born and raised in Carlisle, adding: “He [Firmin] was actually born close to where I started boxing.”

Phil Campion overcame a difficult upbringing to serve in the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment. He later joined the SAS, succeeding in a selection process that few make it through and in 2011 published an autobiography, ‘Born Fearless’.

He used Wilter’s Gym in Maryport as a training ground in the build-up to Remembrance Rumble and has boxed on the charity fight card multiple times which sees British SAS soldiers taking-on US Navy Seals in charity boxing exhibitions.

Rusty Firmin was involved in the siege of the London Iranian Embassy in 1980. The terrorist incident later became the subject of a major movie, ‘6 Days’.

One of the stars of the hit Channel 4 show, ‘SAS: Who Dares Wins’ has headlined a previous event put on by Mr Kirkbride, and he added that he has “more in the pipeline.”

The Pilgrim Bandits charity teaches new skills to veterans and then hosts endurance challenges.

For example, in October, veterans and amputees took part in a 300-mile kayak down a river in South Africa.

Doors open for the evening at 8pm; tickets can be purchased for £30 from Wilter’s Gym on Crosby Street or by calling 07956625562.
