Cockermouth and Keswick secondary schools have been confirmed as above average for progress with the publication of league tables.

Keswick School achieved an above-average Progress 8 score of 0.25, which is a significant improvement on 2017’s average 0.12, and a marginally increased Attainment 8 score of 53.9.

In English and maths 56 per cent of students received grade five or higher, two per cent down on last year.

After the release of interim figures last year, headteacher Simon Jackson said: “Outstanding student performance is a reflection of hard work, great determination and excellent teaching and pupil support. Keswick students are incredibly impressive.”

Cockermouth also improved its Progress 8 score, from 0.04 last year to 0.19, making it above average, while its Attainment 8 score rose from 50.7 in 2017 to 52. In English and maths, 54 per cent of students received grade five or higher, two per cent up on 2017.

St Joseph’s School in Workington has an average Progress 8 score of -0.08, an increase on 2017’s -0.25, while its Attainment 8 score improved from 41.6 to 45.4 and in English and maths 38 per cent of students received grade five or higher, an 11 per cent increase on 2017.

Aspatria’s Beacon Hill Community School achieved a Progress 8 score at -0.4, up from 2017’s -0.63, which moved it from well below average to average. It Attainment 8 score increased by 0.94 to 36.8, and 21 per cent of pupils received grade five or higher in English and maths, up slightly.

Workington Academy remained below average with a Progress 8 score of -0.5, a slight decrease from 2017’s -0.39. Its Attainment 8 score decreased marginally to 41.1, while in English and maths 32 per cent of students received grade five or higher, a two per cent decrease on 2017.

Netherhall School in Maryport receive a well below average Progress 8 score of -0.68, which was a big decrease on 2017’s below average -0.26. Its 42.5 Attainment 8 score from 2017 fell to 39.5, while in English and maths 30 per cent of students received grade five or higher, down one percentage point from 2017.

The Energy Coast UTC, at Lillyhall, ranked below average with its Progress 8 score of -0.51 and Attainment 8 score of 38.8, while in English and maths 24 per cent of its students received grade five or higher.

However, a spokesman for the college said Ofsted and the Department for Education had agreed that Progress 8 figures were not an appropriate measure for UTC students as they were only at the college for two of the five years measured.

Attainment 8 measures a student’s average grade across eight subjects – the same subjects that count towards Progress 8, which measures a student’s progress between key stage two and key stage four. A school’s score is the average of all of its students’ scores.

For all schools in England, the average Attainment 8 score is 44.5, while for state-funded schools it is 46.5. The average Progress 8 score for state-funded schools is -0.02.

English and maths results show on average 40.2 per cent of students in England get grade five or higher, with that rising to 43.3 per cent in state-funded schools.
