A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of seriously injuring two babies.

The pair, both from Carlisle, are currently on bail while investigations into the cause of the children’s injuries continue.

Police were called after the babies were admitted to the city’s Cumberland Infirmary and concerned medical staff contacted officers.

No further details have been released on the children’s injuries.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary told the News & Star: “A man and woman, aged 30 and 28 respectively, have been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

“Both, who are from Carlisle, have been bailed as enquiries continue.

“The arrests follow an investigation that was launched after concerns were raised to police on January 16 by medical professionals at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, regarding injuries to two children under the age of one.

“Both children have been safeguarded.”

The man and woman are due to answer bail next month.
