A DRUNK man who growled at police officers in Carlisle city centre has admitted being drunk and disorderly.

Paul Nigel Dickinson, 49, of Partridge Place, Belle Vue, also shouted obscenities at officers before he was arrested on the evening of December 21 last year.

His defence lawyer Rachel Dixon said: "He's embarrassed.

"He is truly ashamed to find himself before the court.

"He is sorry for his actions.

"He'd been to a Christmas party, and drank alcohol, which he hadn't done for some time.

"He forgot about the impact that alcohol would have on the medication he takes for schizophrenia. It was the combination of alcohol and his medication which led to the deterioration of his behaviour. It's an explanation, not an excuse."

Magistrates imposed a £40 fine, with £85 costs, and a £30 victim surcharge.

As he left court, the defendant smiled at magistrates and said: "Thank you very much, your worships. Have a good day."
