A STANWIX councillor has expressed his disappointment at drivers after a survey recorded 51 vehicles running red lights in a single day.

Last week, Cumbria Police revealed the hotspots where dozens of drivers have flouted traffic light signals in Carlisle.

The officers have warned motorists not to run the red lights after a survey found many were ignoring the law.

It follows reports from members of the public about drivers ignoring the red lights on Scotland Road at Mulcaster Crescent and Etterby Street in Stanwix, Carlisle.

A survey recorded a total of 51 vehicles in a single day running red lights at the busy junctions.

Police collision reduction officer Norman Black said: “This type of driving offence puts all road users at risk, including other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

“We will be following up on the findings of this survey and will be taking action against any drivers we find wilfully ignoring the lights in an attempt to shave time from their journey.

“Our officers will also be taking the opportunity to target other drivers who put road users at risk including those driving whilst on their mobile phone and those driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.”

Community leaders are backing safety calls.

Reacting to the news of the hotspots in his area, Stanwix Urban councillor Paul Nedved said: “All of the Stanwix councillors are disappointed to see our area identified as a hotspot for motorists running red lights.

“It has been an ongoing problem in our area, with the issue raised by Councillor Mallinson, Councillor Robson, and myself, at the police hub and Stanwix forums over the years.

“Councillor Mallinson has encouraged the police to monitor the situation with the drivers in our area.

“In Stanwix, there is a high proportion of elderly residents, and young children here, and the actions by the motorists who run these red lights are mindless, simply dangerous, and putting members of the public at risk. I would urge drivers to please take care.”
