A 20-year-old man who was caught driving at 115mph has been banned from the road.

Efstathios Stephanou pleaded-guilty on December 5, by letter, to the speeding-offence which took place on April 28 last year.

Stephanou, from Waterloo Street, Cockermouth, appeared before District Judge Gerald Chalk at Carlisle Magistrates Court today to be sentenced.

The court was told told he drove his Ford Fiesta at speeds between 95mph and115mph for over six-and-a-half miles on the southbound carriageway of the M6, near junction 38 at Tebay.

He told the judge he needs his driving licence, as he is an apprentice electrician working at the Sellafield site.

But he was disqualified for 48-days and ordered to pay a fine of £750, court costs of £400 and a victims surcharge of £75.
