Peter Vickers is used to breeding champions but now he has something special to celebrate - a win at the United States equivalent of Crufts.

Mr Vickers, 55, from Maryport, has been breeding terriers all his life.

“My dad was a breeder and judge and I have been involved since I was a young child.”

He breeds terriers of all kinds at his Ellenside Kennels and has sold several dogs overseas, but mainly around Europe.

But last year he sold a pup to a Californian couple and that dog, a Lakeland terrier, took the best of breed championship in Orlando, Florida.

Last month two-year-old Ellenside Red Ike At Eskwyre was shown at the Westminster Dog Show in Madison Square Gardens, New York, where he again won the best in breed championship.

Mr Vickers said it was especially gratifying since the dog had been named Ike after his own father.

“I have bred five or six champions, including at Crufts but I am very proud of this one. I don’t know what it will do for the kennels but it will make more people aware of us,” he said.
