Winnie, the dog mauled nearly to death in badger baiting incident, is proving both feisty and forgiving.

The little terrier was found in Flimby late last year. She had significant lower jaw injuries where the skin had been been ripped away and there were multiple bite wounds to the front half of her body.

To operate would cost thousands but, thanks to public donations and the willingness of the Oak Hill Veterinary Clinic in Windermere to reduce their costs, the three-year old is recovering.

RSPCA re-homing co-ordinator Jean Kitchen said a foster home has now been found for the little dog.

"We had to find someone local to the Windermere area because she still needs regular trips to the vet and she has more surgery to undergo."

But she said Winnie has made a miraculous recovery and show no signs of animosity towards the human race that trained her to badger bait.

"It must have been horrendous training. But she is so friendly and will jump up onto any lap for a cuddle."

Prior to finding a home, Winnie has been starying at the Milnthorpe Kennels and Cattery where owner Stella Norman said she is a very affectionate little dog, very curious and full of energy.

"She has all the characteristics of a feisty, curious terrier"
