A convenience store is proving more than convenient to local charities.

One Stop in Maryport has named staff member Andrea Winthrop as "charity champion" and, in only eight months, she has raised over "£1,700 for local charities with more to come in the future.

Her latest event, at the weekend, was raising money for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

In only two days, Friday and Saturday, she raised £716 from a raffle, tombola, a cake sale and the chance to guess the name of a llama.

Store manager David Edwards said the company was "very proud of her."

He also thanked staff for getting involved and supporting Mrs Winthrop.

In October last year Mrs Winthrop raised over £1,000 for McMillan Cancer Support.

"I've only been in this role for eight months and am really enjoying it. I have been surprised and grateful for the amount of money we have raised," she said.

She said there were more events in the pipeline which would support other local charities.

Stella Walsh, senior fundraiser said: “We want to thank the team at One Stop for supporting their local hospice charity, Hospice at Home West Cumbria. Every penny we receive helps us to provide specialist care and support to people living with life limiting illnesses and to their families in our local community.”
