Audiences at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington are being reminded this week that they'll never walk alone as Carousel: A Concert graces the stage.

Workington Amateur Operatic Society is staging the adaptation of the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical until Saturday, and those watching are in for a treat.

Starting at an amusement park on the New England coast, the show tells the story of rougish carnival barker Billy Bigelow and mill worker Julie Jordan, who meet and fall in love, costing them both their jobs and more.

It gets off to a strong start with Julie (Jasmin Smith) and her friend Carrie Pipperidge (Amy Roebuck Smith) giving a power-filled performance of Mister Snow in the second scene.

It may only just be spring but the cast's rendition of June is Bustin' Out All Over, led by Kath Smith as Nettie Fowler, gives a welcome glimpse into more summery times.

And Andrew McMinn showed the talent that has led to him taking on more leading roles in recent shows as he played Billy.

The show also starred Graham Hawley as Enoch Snow, Alison Philips and Mrs Mullins, Val Cuthbert as Arminy, Ryan O'Hagan as Jigger Craigin and Liz Turnbull as Starkeeper.

Ed McGee is Mr Bascombe, with Norman Brayton as Dr Seldon, Any White as Enoch Snow Jr and Robyn Miller as Louise.

Billy might have started to wonder what life was all about, but this week in Workington it's clear it's all about watching WAOS' latest top standard production.

The cast sang about a real nice clambake but more importantly theirs was a real nice show.

If you love musical theatre, crack open the clams and get yourself to the Carnegie to see the show so you're not left wond'rin.

Carousel runs until tomorrow, showing at 7.15pm. For tickets visit carnegietheatre.co.uk or call 01900 602122.
