Proposed street names suggested by the company behind a big housing development in Cockermouth have been rejected by the town council.

Alternative ones have been suggested by councillors.

Story Homes recently sent a list of the proposed street names for the second phase of Strawberry Grange to Allerdale Council, which asked town councillors to consider if they are acceptable.

The names were: Casshow Way, Whinnyhill Drive, Ribton Close, Holme Court and Armaside Drive.

At a town council meeting this week, Councillor Alan Smith said: "These names have nothing to do with Cockermouth whatsoever, I don't like them and don't know where they dreamed them up from."

Councillor David Malloy said: "I had a quick look at maps regarding what's around there. There's Horseshoe Wood up there and the old railway line went through there. There was also an ancient packhorse right of way."

Councillors came up with various names with local links: Tom Rudd Close or Way, Anfield Drive, Packhorse Close, Oakhurst Way, Horseshoe Drive and McKay Court.

"These seem better, the others have no bearing on what's around here," said Councillor Malloy.
