FIREFIGHTERS have raised hundreds of pounds for a charity that helps 'everyday heroes to recover their lives.'

The fire crew from Barrow Fire Station were putting out stains rather than fires at the weekend as they held their annual car wash to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.

On Saturday (March 23) the team raised £320 for the national charity which supports members of the fire service who are ill, injured or in need of psychological support.

On the charity's website it states that their ethos is all about 'helping everyday heroes to recover their lives.'

Barrow Fire Station manager Roger Exley said: "People always like to see the fire service out in the community and the money raised from the event will go a long way in supporting a very worthy cause - the Fire Fighters Charity.

"All the money raised will be going directly to supporting the fire fighters and their families who receive excellent level of care to either support them in their lives or to help them return to duty.

Jamie Coward, watch manager at Barrow Fire Station, said: "We have seen a really positive response from the public and it is always great for the fire fighters to be seen in a different light and engaging with the Barrow community.

"People particularly like the 'Heart Start' first aid sessions, which we also provide for organisations and businesses throughout the area."

Graham Dixon who attended on the day with his two grandchildren Jacob and Noak McClure said: "Jacob is obsessed with Fireman Sam so has loved coming down today, playing in the fire engine and seeing all the firefighters.

"It is also great to see all the firemen interacting with the community."
