A COUNCIL worker has been disqualified from driving.

Julie Howley was stopped by police near Thursby at about 2.30am on March 3. Officers thought she smelt of alcohol but she refused a roadside breath test.

The 58-year-old, of Coronation Street, Maryport, was taken into custody and found to have 43mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Defence lawyer Lauren Heasley said Howley and her partner had been to a gig at the Old Fire Station in Carlisle. They were staying at the Crown and Mitre but after a fallout she did a "foolish thing" and decided to drive home to Maryport.

Howley, who has no previous convictions, told the court: "I'm sorry for what I have done. It won't happen again."

She was disqualified for 13 months and offered a driving course to reduce the ban. She also owes the court £85 in costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
