Parts of Cumbria woke to snow this morning - with hazardous driving conditions reported on many roads.

The Met Office issued a yellow alert for snow at 1.40am, which remains in place until 10am.

Motorists have reported snow settling both on the carriageway and on roadsides of major roads including the A66 between Penrith and Appleby and on the M6 around Shap.

Other affected roads include:

  • A686 Hartside Pass: Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on A686 Hartside Pass between the Slaggyford turn off and the Gamblesby turn off.
  • Lanehead - A689: Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on A689 around B6295.
  • Shap - A6: Snow on A6 at Shap Summit. Approach with care.
  • Hartley - A685: Hazardous driving conditions and queueing traffic due to snow on A685 Westbound from Brougham Lane (Hartley) to B6261 (Eden).
  • Keswick - A591: Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on A591 around Keswick.
  • Hartsop - A592 Kirkstone Pass: Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on A592 Kirkstone Pass between Townhead Brow and Road End.

Fog is also causing problems on the A66 between Brough and Bowes, with reduced visibility.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "A spell of sleet and snow is expected, mostly on high ground. Two to 5cm snow may accumulate above 200m, whilst 5cm to 10cm is possible above 400m in a few places.

"This may lead to tricky driving conditions and some disruption on higher routes. Any snow at lower levels looks less likely to settle on roads.

"Sleet and snow will mostly die out by late morning with a thaw then likely."
