Children are going wild during the school holidays thanks to the launch of a new playground.

The animal-themed playground at the Lake District Wildlife Park near Keswick was unveiled by pupils from nearby Bassenthwaite Primary School.

It gives youngsters the chance to have fun and learn about animals in a new way.

Constructed with timber from the Queen’s Sandringham Estate, the playground has been designed to have a natural feel and includes animal carvings, such as a giant spider with a web to climb on, a red panda house, an osprey nest and a huge squirrel drey to clamber in and out of.

The park ran a competition to name the new attraction. The winning name - Crazy Creatures Adventure Playground - was suggested by eight-year-old Rebecca Meadley.

Lucy Dunn, education and marketing co-ordinator at the park, said: “This new animal-themed playground allows children to let off a bit of steam and encourages them to enjoy their time outside.

"We are strong believers in learning outside the classroom, so promoting play in learning is an ideal way to engage youngsters and to help them explore the world of animals in a different way. The new playground is designed to be friendly for all abilities, from young toddlers through to big kids.

“Involving children in the competition to name the playground has also helped them to use their imagination and to get them taking about a range of animal themes. Congratulations to our winner, Rebecca.”
