THE owner of internet sensation dogs Max, Paddy and Harry, has spoken out against littering after one of his Spaniels was injured by broken glass.

Kerry Irving was out walking with his dogs at Harrop Tarn, Thirlmere, when Paddy walked through some broken glass that had been left on the footpath.

Paddy then jumped in the tarn and when he came out Kerry realised his paw was cut.

Kerry, of Keswick, believes glass was left over a warm barbecue and shattered.

He said: "Luckily the other two dogs didn't cut themselves. When Paddy came out of the water I realised there was blood everywhere. From there we had to go back to the van and drive through to the vet in Cockermouth. We do always carry a little first aid kit so we managed to clean the cut before heading to the vet.

"I think there needs to be more enforcement. As the Lake District becomes more popular we need to put a stop to people leaving litter.

"You could be walking down on the shore of Derwent Water and there'll be people having a barbecue, some are responsible and dispose of everything, others see that the barbecue is going out, so they'll pile some wood and then their rubbish and walk away - then it's somebody else's problem."

Kerry added that Max also injured himself three weeks ago due to broken glass and his paw is only starting to heal now.

He said: "In the last two years we spent over £500 in vet bills due to broken glass."

Paddy's dressing is due to be removed tomorrow. A post on Kerry's popular Facebook page Max Out in the Lake District about the incident generated hundreds of comments.

On Sunday Kerry and his dogs will take part in a beach clean in Allonby. Tickets cost £9 and money raised will go to the Cockermouth Community Hospital League of Friends to purchase equipment.
