A new Spar store in the centre of Workington is starting to take shape.

Building started on the site of a former petrol station in Harrington Road in January, more than two years after plans were submitted to develop the store.

James Hall and Company Ltd was given the green light to turn the former JR Graham filling station on the corner of Harrington Road and Douglas Road in Workington into a convenience store in 2017.

The garage was knocked down last February in preparation for work to start on the new shop.

The site had been fenced off and workers and machinery have been on site getting work under way on the development since the start of the year.

Now a crane is on site to help put the framework in place.

The site has previously been a petrol station, car sales business and car wash but closed in 2009.

It was put up for sale in 2012 by owner Peter Graham, whose grandfather John started the business.

James Hall and Company Ltd is a wholesaler and distributor for Spar, which has more than 2,400 shops in the UK.

The company did not comment.
