A man was airlifted to hospital following a serious crash near Brampton.
The two-vehicle crash happened on the A6071 Brampton to Longtown road.
The collision - involving a Volkswagen car and a Ford Transit van - occurred at the Scaleby junction, at about 10.30am.
The road has now reopened.
Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance and North West Ambulance Service, rushed to the scene.
The male driver of the Volkswagen was flown to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries.
The 30-year-old, from Coventry, was said to be in a stable condition.
His passenger, a 27-year-old woman from Coventry, also needed hospital treatment.
Her injuries were less serious and she was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary by road ambulance.
The van driver - a 20-year-old man from Carlisle - was uninjured.
Cumbria Police said the families of the injured people have been informed.
The road was closed for hours while collision investigations were carried out.
Police thanked motorists for their patience.
