A man has appeared in court to face three charges following an incident in which a woman was injured at a house in Carlisle.

Marian Uciu, 37, was charged with three offences by Cumbria Police: wounding Nicoleta Costea with intent; false imprisonment and making threats to kill.

At the city's magistrates' court today Uciu, of Scotby Close, Carlisle, appeared in front of District Judge Gerald Chalk.

The trouble, which police described as a "serious domestic incident", flared in the early hours of yesterday. Police were called to an address in Scotby Close, off Eastern Way, at 2.45am.

Detectives said that a woman suffered injuries to her arms and hands.

A force spokesman said the woman's injured were "not believed to be life-altering or life-threatening".

In court, it was said she was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary.

During the hearing Uciu spoke through a Romanian interpreter and entered no pleas to the allegations put before him.

District Judge Chalk declined jurisdiction of the case and sent it to Carlisle Crown Court.

Uciu was remanded in custody.

He is scheduled to appear at the crown court on June 3.
