A man accused of causing the death of a motorcyclist by careless driving is to stand trial later this year.

Ryan Stobart, 24, faced one charge when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court this morning.

This alleges that Stobart, of Hesket Newmarket, caused the death of David Holden by the careless driving of a Mercedes A class car on November 2 in 2017.

The charge arises out of an collision at Goosegreen crossroads, close to Welton at the junction of the B5303 between Penrith and Wigton, and the B5299. This occurred at around 8.10am.

During a short crown court hearing in front of Judge Peter Davies, bespectacled Stobart pleaded not guilty to the charge he faces.

A trial in front of a jury - estimated to last around three days - was listed to start on September 23.

In the meantime Stobart - who was represented by lawyer Tom Gent and spoke in court to confirm his identity, date of birth and to enter a not guilty plea - was granted unconditional bail by Judge Davies.

Mr Holden, who was aged 54 and from Wigton, had been riding a Yamaha motorcycle at the time of the collision, and suffered fatal injuries. An ambulance and air ambulance was reported to have attended the scene.

In a statement, his family had described him as a brilliant and loving father who was "a rock" to his wife Tracy.
