Detectives in Carlisle are appealing for witnesses after a woman was raped in the city.

Police are investigating the incident which happened in the car park at the back of Matalan and The Pools swimming baths on James Street.

It happened between 10.30pm and 11.00pm on Friday, however, details have only just been released.

A police spokesperson said: "The victim, a woman in her thirties from the local area, is being supported by officers."

A 22-year-old man, from Carlisle, has been arrested on suspicion of rape and affray. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

"Detectives are appealing for any witnesses who have been in the area between 10pm and 11.30pm to come forward," the force spokesperson added.

"Enquiries have revealed both silver and red-coloured cars were seen in the area and police would like to speak to the occupants of these vehicles.

"Officers would also like to hear from anyone else who walked through the area between the times who can assist with enquiries."
