Firefighters who took part in a national fundraiser to bring the team and their community together have raised more than £800.

The crew from Silloth fire station were raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity by washing cars on bank holiday Monday.

Bobby Benson, crew manager for Silloth, said: “The car wash event is a national fundraiser and a fantastic opportunity to bring our local fire fighters and their community together.

“The informal setting allows relationships to be made in much less demanding circumstances than when we are responding to an incident.”

The Fire Fighters Charity is an organisation that supports fire crews and their families nationally, aspects of which include mental and physical health and general social wellbeing.

The charity delivers personal support in a number of different ways - over the phone, online, in the local community or at one of the charity’s special centres across the country.

A range of services are provided by the charity that enhance the quality of life for serving and retired service personnel and their families. The charity offers three core services.

Rehabilitation - residential programmes run by teams and physical treatment for a wide range of conditions.

Recuperation - recover from illness, injury or surgery in countryside or coastal locations.

Community servies - confidential and impartial helpline service, offering advice, guidance and support on a wide range of issues.

In 2017/18, £236,000 was raised in total for the charity and that was mainly due to the car wash days, with Slough Fire Station, Royal Berkshire raising the most money. They raised £3,618.35

Bobby added: “There are over 600 stations involved, and in total £3.8m has been raised since the scheme first began.”

The car wash took place on Silloth Heritage Centre car park on Monday.

Bobby continued: “It went really well.

“It was non stop from start to finish.

“It’s a great feeling, and it couldn’t be going to a better cause that does so much for fire fighters and their families.”

In total £821.30 was raised by Silloth fire crew.
