THERE was no need for speed in this run - just the simple ingredients of fun, foam and fluorescent colour.

Scores of people of all ages and abilities turned out to take part in the 5th annual Carlisle Colour Run for Eden Valley Hospice.

As they dashed around Carlisle Racecourse they were showered in a rainbow of colour before being met by bath of bubbles where they were cheered on by friends and family.

The event, which is the biggest of the year for the hospice, raised £55,000 in 2018.

Katrina Sander, fundraising manager, hopes they will have hit a similar target this year as more than 1,200 people had signed up.

"It appeals to all ages and abilities. It's a bit of fun getting covered in the paint and foam," she said.

"It helps raise money for the hospice which is essential but also raises awareness for those who haven't had any contact with the hospice.

"I want to thank everybody for taking part. The hospice wouldn't be here without the support."

She added thanks to all the sponsors - including Carlisle Brass, Pioneer, and The Cumberland - and the 100-strong army of volunteers who helped the event run smoothly.

Among those taking part was Louise Clitheroe, of Dalston. She was with her friends Sarah Palmer and Annabel Wood and children Amelia Clitheroe, eight, Evelyn Palmer, eight, George Palmer, six, and two-year-old Jacob Palmer.

Louise, 39, said: "We usually do one at Muncaster. It is always such a fun day.

"The kids love getting covered in paint. It's good to promote something fun that involves fitness.

"It's a way of encouraging the kids to do a bit of running and raise money for charity. All good things you want to instil in kids."
