A News & Star campaign to celebrate the best of the National Health Service is in the running for a top award - and you could steer it to success.

Our NHS 70 campaign shone a spotlight on the heroes of our health service to mark last year’s milestone anniversary in the nation’s history.

It told the stories of many of the people behind the hard-working NHS in Cumbria, as well as those whose lives have been saved or transformed by the remarkable dedication and skills of those who work tirelessly to ensure we can live the best lives possible.

That great insight - supported by NHS trusts across Cumbria - has been shortlisted for an accolade as part of Journalism Matters, a campaign that kick-starts today and which highlights the vital role trusted news media journalism plays in our democratic society.

It includes the

Making a Difference award

- in which the News & Star’s NHS 70 is shortlisted - which highlights the power of the local media to campaign for positive change in the communities they serve.

The winner will be decided by a public vote, with the title presented at the Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards on Friday.

Spearheaded by health reporter Pamela McGowan, NHS 70 featured 70 days of coverage to thank staff for all they do, telling inspiring and exclusive stories.

Chris Story, editor of the News & Star, said: “We’re very proud to see NHS 70 shortlisted alongside some amazing campaigns from across the country.

“We had remarkable response to what was an uplifting - often inspiring - insight into the work carried out in Cumbria and the history of the NHS here. If we were to win the award, it would be a testament to the hard-working health workers that we’re so fortunate to have in the county.”
