EVERYONE should sample the magical atmosphere of evening racing at Cartmel Racecourse, a champion Cumbrian trainer has said.

James Moffatt, who trains from his Pitt Farm stables in Cartmel, is aiming a number of his horses for The Mail's Race Day on Wednesday May 29.

He described the atmosphere at the course as unique, adding the return of evening racing to the Cartmel calendar for the first time in five years was superb news.

"I love it," James said of Cartmel Racecourse.

"The Wednesday night fixture will have a great atmosphere. It will be relaxed and good fun. People go along to enjoy the racing which makes it really special."

James has been crowned champion trainer at Cartmel Racecourse three times in his career - taking the title in 2015, 2016 and 2017. His tally of wins as a rider and trainer at the course stands at 46.

But he hopes to make it a magnificent 50 this year with a number of his horses - including Golden Town, Lough Kent, Boruma and Morning Royalty - now poised to line up under starter's orders on The Mail's race night.

The evening will feature seven races in total with the first getting underway at 5pm.

James added: "I'm certainly aiming to make it 50 winners on course this year. The racegoers at Cartmel are very supportive, I always enjoy it. It's a wonderful asset to the area and we're looking forward to racing there this year."

The Mail has teamed up with Cartmel Racecourse to launch the track’s first ever Ladies Night - with a competition to find the best dressed lady and gentleman of the evening. The winners will each receive a fantastic prize worth more than £1,150. Entry to the course costs from just £5.
