LINDALE’S historic coaching Inn was demolished on Monday, May 13. It exists now only in photos and memories.
It is hoped that the design of the new Audi garage will be sympathetic to the old iInn.
A group of villagers had tried to save the inn and had applied to have it listed. This attempt was rejected by Historic England, on the grounds that the inn was too much altered inside and out and that there was no link to any person of national importance. This latter point is incorrect as the inn was part of the estate of John Wilkinson, the famous iron master, who lived at Castle Head.
It is sad to think of all the happy times, the family parties, quiz evenings and village events which took place in the Lindale Inn.
A ‘wake’ book of Lindale Inn memories is now being researched. Please send your memories in.
