A TOWN crier has made history as the first person to be honoured with a new award for his years of service to his community.

Peter Winston was presented with the Freedom of the Town accolade at the annual general meeting of Ulverston Town Council.

Mr Winston, who was presented with his award by town mayor Cllr Dave Webster, has also spent time on various committees over the years, including the Dickensian Committee. He has also helped in the organisation of Ulverston in Bloom and given much of his time to making the town what it is today.

Cllr Webster was full of praise for Mr Winston and his efforts.

“Peter thoroughly deserves this award," he said. “He has put in many years of meritorious service to the community.

“He was loudly applauded by the town council when I first suggested he be the first recipient.”

Speaking more about the decision to introduce the award, Cllr Webster said: “We didn’t have anything to give to anyone who has done a lot of service to the town over a long period.

“Peter has done just that.

“He is the town crier and has been involved in a number of events including the Dickensian Festival and Flag Fest.

“This award won’t be handed out every year.

“It will be given out when the council agrees there is someone who is really worthy.

“Peter is most definitely worthy.”

Those in attendance at the town council’s annual general meeting also saw Cllr Webster present donations to all of his mayoral charities.

In total, £2,300 was raised over the course of the year.

This money was split up and handed out to a host of good causes including: Ulverston Amateur Operatic Society, Ulverston Town Band, Wednesday Club, Age Concern, Ulverston Pantomime Society and the North West Air Ambulance.
