HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend a walking event in aid of a hospice care charity.

People from across Hambleton and Richmondshire will turn out to complete a choice of three walking routes in support of the Northallerton-based charity Herriot Hospice Homecare.

Celebrity vet Julian Norton, who has appeared in the Channel 5 programme 'The Yorkshire Vet' is also expected to take part in the event.

As part of the fundraiser on Sunday, July 14, walkers will be offered two, seven or 12-mile routes centred around Jervaulx Abbey in return for a £5 entry fee.

Chief executive of Herriot Hospice Homecare, Tony Collins, said: “Walk for Herriot is a brand new event, and one we’re exceptionally excited to offer our community the chance to be part of. Set amid picturesque countryside surrounding the historic Jervaulx Abbey, the walk promises to be a unique and memorable experience for those taking part – whether walking in tribute to someone special, or for fun with family and friends – what’s more, the walk offers participants the chance to dedicate a beautiful wrought-iron flower in our Herriot in Bloom memory garden, in celebration of the lives of loved ones."

Herriot Hospice Homecare spends around £1 million each year on running its 'vital' services across the county. Many of the services operated by the hospice are offered to residents in North Yorkshire at no cost, meaning the charity is heavily reliant on donations.

Mr Collins added: "We are incredibly grateful to the individuals and businesses who have helped to make the event possible, including longstanding Herriot supporter Julian Norton who will join us on the day – Jervaulx Abbey for providing this venue."

In March, several motor repair firms said they would be offering Herriot Hospice Homecare staff substantial discounts on servicing, MOT's and repairs.

JW 4x4, Oaktree Garage and Richmond Motor Services agreed to offer the discounts.

Andrew Townson of Richmond Motor Services said: "With the hard work and dedication that staff provide people in their homes, during the last weeks and days of life, it is only right, that we as a company try our best to look after the staff that help others.

"It is important that they have their vehicles in great working order to be able to attend work and to be able to drive to people that need them most."
