He said the firm focused on innovation, not just in safety on site, but making sure its staff were also looked after.

It has trained and coached over 15 mental health first aiders to help identify any issues within the team and giving its staff someone to talk to if they needed to.

Schemes have included a Summer of Safety, which was put together to refocus the team on key safety messages post-holiday season and a post-Christmas back to work safety briefing for more than 260 staff.

Mr Lacey added: "It is with some personal pride that I accepted these awards on behalf of all individuals from within i3 and our supply chain who continue the hard work and dedication of working safely every day.

"Last month we have surpassed the 745,000 hours without a lost time accident while continuing to deliver this nationally important project and we must continue to drive to the one million hours without a lost time accident and beyond.

"Safety is an important part of our working day."
