A KIND-hearted woman has thrown herself out of a plane to support a family affected by cancer after being touched by their story.

Michelle Smith, of Cleator Moor, completed a sponsored skydive on Saturday with some of the money raised going to the children of Susan Clark, from Workington, who died in March after battling cervical cancer.

Michelle, who works at West House, took to the skies with Susan’s sister, Lisa Rumney, on what would have been the mum-of-three’s 27th birthday.

“It was a euphoria,” Michelle said. “It was the best experience. The views were amazing. It’s hard to put into words. I’m so glad I did it. I’ve done all my family proud.

“If it’s on your bucket list, just go and do it.”

The 42-year-old said she wanted to be a part of the skydive following her own health scare. In October 2017, Michelle discovered a large ovarian cyst, which could have been fatal if it ruptured.

She said: “I was lucky it was taken out. I received the best care and minimal stress at West Cumberland Hospital with my consultant and surgeon, Mr Ali. I’m privileged to be here. It could have been a different story. I’m definitely one of the lucky ones.”

Since then Michelle has thrown herself into every opportunity that comes along. She joined two walking groups – Let’s Walk the Lakes and Fellowship of the Fells – which she says has been fundamental in her recovery. Every year she organises a cheeky topless photo at the top of a fell, which she does to empower other women and encourage them not to take life too seriously.

“I’ve got a second chance at life and I don’t intend to waste it.”
