There's a buzz in the air in Broughton as the village counts down to its busiest day in the calendar, with carnival day just a week away on July 20.

Most of the queens are already in place, but the committee are still searching for a Herald, Prince and Princess and a Snow Queen. If anyone is interested in entering any of these please contact Anne Davis on 01900 824440 or a carnival committee member.

This year's queens are: Lexie Mather - Carnival Queen; Meya Moore - Retiring Queen; Esme Little, Rose Queen; Freya Coe Wedgewood - Fairy Queen; Amelia Fisher - Ivy Queen; Sophia Tzelepi-Jones - Gypsy Queen; Samantha Hewitt - Miss Broughton and Elizabeth Stephenson - Britannia.

Anne Davis, secretary of Broughton Children's Carnival, said: "We've done well on the fundraising, we've had several quizzes, a race night and a sponsored walk. The race night was really good, we had it in the British Legion. We still have little 5p jars to fill, if anyone wants one of the jars they should contact Sue Leech on 01900 824738."

Anyone wishing to take part in the carnival should be at the field on Moor Road by 1.30pm for a 2pm start. Visiting queens are welcome. There is no judging, apart from entertainment en route.

Broughton Primary School will be entering, and there will be several comedy acts from the local pubs.

Three bands will be there to get the crowds roused, Tyneside Pipe Band, Workington Brass Band and Mossley Band.

There will also be entries of vintage vehicles.

The procession will go through Great and Little Broughton and meet up on the Welfare Field at around 4pm for the crowning ceremony, where queens will be on the stage to watch retiring queen Meya Moore crown Lexie Mather the new carnival queen.

All children under 16 that take part in the procession will receive a rosette and a voucher for refreshments.

The roads will be closed for the carnival from 2pm to 4pm.
