A crackdown on drugs in a West Cumbrian town has led to a number of arrests being made.

Police have carried out an operation aimed at stamping out the supply and use of drugs in Workington due to concerns raised by people in Moorclose and the town centre.

Three people have been arrested so far – two for drugs supply and one for possession of a bladed article – and the operation is set to continue with more patrols planned in the coming weeks.

Councillor Stephen Stoddart, who represents Moorclose on Cumbria County Council, Allerdale council and Workington Town Council, hopes police will continue to be aggressive in tackling drug problems in his ward and also believes it would have a knock-on effect of reducing other crimes.

“There is a lot of drug use in my ward and a fair bit of antisocial behaviour which is obviously linked,” he said.

“I definitely think it’s all linked in and by targeting drug supply like this hopefully they can reduce related crimes.

“I’m pleased to see the police back in Moorclose.

“They are lacking in numbers and resources but personally I have got nothing but praise for the local police for their involvement in my ward.”

Posting on the Allerdale Focus Facebook page, police said: “In response to community concerns raised in the Moorclose and town centre areas of Workington, the pro-active team conducted an operation targeting drug use and supply.

“As a result, two adults were arrested for being concerned in the supply of drugs and one for possession of a bladed article.

“We will be conducting more of these patrols in the coming weeks.

“Please report any information you have on drug supply to 101emails@cumbria.police.uk or Crimestoppers.”
