Travellers who set up camp on a Workington car park have left.

Allerdale council began proceedings to move on the group on Wednesday after being made aware of their arrival.

They were given notice to leave by 4pm today, and the council would have required a court order to be able to instruct bailiffs to move them on if they had not left.

But that will not be necessary.

A council spokesman said: "The Travellers who had been occupying part of Central car park in Workington left last night."

While the Travellers were in place, the council allowed people with permits for its Workington car parks to use the town's multi-storey car park.

That measure is no longer in place and drivers are advised to go back to using their usual parking places.

The spokesman added: "If you use the council’s car parks on a regular basis, permits provide really good value.

"There is also an early bird offer at the multi-storey car park. If you arrive before 9am you can park all day for just £2.50.”
