A VILLAGE church and tearoom are delighted to have raised more than £3,000 at their annual Strawberry Teas event earlier this month.

Holme Cultram Abbey Church and Tearoom, Abbeytown held the event on July 13 and 14 raising £3,620.50 that will go towards restoration work caused by a fire in 2006 and general upkeep of the church.

Jean Armstrong, treasurer, said: “Despite all the sporting activities taking place we had tremendous support.

“All the cakes and savouries were made by the ladies and friends of the abbey.

“We had lots of visitors both locally and from further a field and couldn’t have raised the money without them.

“We’re most grateful for their support over the weekend.”

As well as cakes and savouries, there was a raffle.

Ladies and supporters of the Abbey often make lunches, afternoon teas and high teas that visitors can go and enjoy.

The tearoom is currently only open by appointment

and run by volunteers, but they do offer a tea and talk service.

The tea and talk service is a way of groups to hear about the history of the Abbey.
