Tributes have been paid to a passionate church volunteer who died in a crash.

William ‘Billy’ Hughes has been described as a much-loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The 84-year-old died after being struck by a white Mercedes Sprinter van in New Street, Wigton, last Wednesday. He was a pedestrian.

The van driver, a 54-year-old Carlisle man, was uninjured.

In a statement, Mr Hughes' family said: “Billy was a devoted family man, very active, and always willing to help in the local community.

"He dedicated much of his spare time to volunteering at St Cuthbert’s, his local church, which gave him great joy.

"His loving wife Alice, daughters Maureen and Jacqueline, and all the wider family, will miss him greatly.”

The crashed happened at about 4pm, and police are continuing to appeal for informatio.

Any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have seen the van or Mr Hughes prior to the collision, are asked to call PC 2090 Craig Hynes of Cumbria Police on 101.
