A Whitehaven athlete took centre stage at the Workington Festival of Running on Sunday.

Paul Graham clinched first place in the festival's 10k event, crossing the line in 35 minutes 39 seconds. Matthew Vokes of DrongO Orienteering Club came second with Shane Stobbart of Cumberland AC third. Lucy Stobbart, of Cumberland AC was the first female.

Organised by Workington Town Council and Cumberland Athletic Club, the event drew runners from across the county with the hopes of increasing numbers in the sport.

Over 150 athletes toed the line in the 1k run but the win went to Luca Roberts, aged eight, with Emily Richardson, nine, second and Rudi Jewell, 10, in third.

In the 5k, Derwent AC’s Bruce Hardy was first male, Daniel Brew of Cumberland AC second and Andrew Henderson was third. Debbie Walker from Derwent AC was first female from Helen Thwaite in second and Rachel Wilson third.

As well as the well attended races, stalls were held alongside children’s entertainment from Imagination Parties. Also, Madeleine Mitchell gave free face painting.
