The descendants of winners of the world’s biggest races will be under starter’s orders at Carlisle Racecourse tonight.

This evening’s seven-race card and beer festival features the latest in a series designed to promote stayers and has entries sired by a host of Group One winners.

Elsewhere on the card, there will be chance for Scottish trainer Keith Dalgleish to open-up his lead as the course’s leading trainer this season.

The Matchbook EBF Future Stayers’ Novices Stakes is part of an initiative for the development and investment in stayers. Record-breaking trainer of winners Mark Johnston brings two of his young hopes to compete in the five-strong field.

Frankel’s Storm is a two-year-old from the great thoroughbred Frankel, who was unbeaten in his 14-race career and was rated the world’s top racehorse. Alongside will be Tulip Fields, from Derby, and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Golden Horn.

Sir Mark Prescott’s Bodyline was sired by Irish Derby champion Australia, and the two-year-old won a novices’ stakes at Epsom earlier in the month. Phil Kirby’s Holmgarth and Viceregent for Richard Fahey will also be looking to carry on the mantel of prestigious sires.

Dalgleish has nine winners from 42 at Carlisle this season, one better than Tim Easterby from 58 runners. The Carluke-based trainer looks to have plenty of options from his declared runners.

In the five-furlong first race, Ventura Flame was second on debut at Carlisle in June and has banked two more places since. Ben Haslam’s Auckland Lodge may provide the opposition. She was a winner at Carlisle in a maiden auction stakes over the same distance in June.

In the 6f Racing TV Fillies’ Handicap, Dalgleish has two runners in Blank Canvas and Forever A Lady. The latter won at Carlisle in May 2017.

There’s no shortage of previous winners in the field, though. Easterby’s Supaulette has a victory at Thirsk and three previous trips at Carlisle this season. And both Michael Appleby’s Bedtime Bella and Eric Alston’s Fox Hill were winners when favourites last time out at Hamilton and Redcar respectively.

Another Dalgleish hope, Roman Stone, is a contender in a 1m 1f novice stakes. The three-year-old was second on debut at Carlisle in July.

One to watch will be Dianne Sayer’s Jeu de Mots. Since switching to the trainer’s yard at Hackthorpe in Cumbria, there have been four chase and hurdle attempts at Cartmel, reaping one win.

Sayer is enjoying a fantastic season, particularly at her home track where she’s recorded six wins from just 19 runners – the latest being Redarna who won at the Ladies Night meeting a week ago.

The evening’s biggest field is a mile handicap with 17 declarations. Among those in with a shout will be Dalgleish’s Cliff Bay, a winner at Carlisle over seven furlongs in June. Richard Whittaker’s Dawn Breaking was a winner earlier in the month at Pontefract.

My Valentino, another Sayer entry, broke his career duck with a first win in 32 at Hamilton last time out.

The evening’s final race over 1m 3f looks one of the most intriguing. Dalgleish again has a challenger with Beechwood Jude, a winner at Carlisle last time out in June, while Edgar Allan Poe has had a terrific season for Rebecca Bastiman with wins at Carlisle and a Pontefract double.

Karen McLintock’s Trinity Star was a 20-1 success at Thirsk earlier in the month and Ed de Giles’ Roar was a beaten favourite at York last time out after victory at Carlisle in May over the same distance.

Tickets for tonight’s racing are £15 for adults if booked in advance. Under-18s gain free entry when accompanied by an adult.

Gates open at 3.10pm, first race is at 5.10pm, last race at 8.15pm.
