More than £6,000 has been raised in just two days after a heartwarming show of support for the family of a man and a teenager who died in a crash on Monday.

Andrew Frith, 58, and Jodie-Anne Frith, 15, both from Silloth, died in a two-vehicle collision on the B5302 near Abbeytown.

Following the announcement of the news, a crowdfunding effort was set up by Andrew Dickinson, operations manager at the DPD Carlisle depot and a colleague of Jodie-Anne’s father, Trevor Frith.

Launched on Tuesday in the hope of raising funds to help support the family, the fundraising effort exceeded its original target of £2,000 in a few hours.

Nearly 200 people donated yesterday on the JustGiving website, raising a grand total of £3,769.

Now the total has surpassed £6,000, and has currently attracted donations from 287 people.

Writing on the fundraising page, Mr Dickinson said: “We are looking for donations to assist in Trevor being away from the business to grieve at this time with his family.”

Speaking to the News & Star, Mr Dickinson said the strength of the community’s response has gone far beyond his expectations.

“The total raised seems to be going up by the minute,” he said.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be received as strongly as it was.

“It was just something that I set up for people at work initially, for people within the DPD network.

“But as the news about it spread through social media more and more people donated.”

Mr Dickinson said he was touched by this outpouring of support from the Cumbrian community.

“It’s heartwarming to see that many people respond,” Mr Dickinson said.

“If you read the comments on the crowdfunding page, there’s customers on Trevor’s route that he delivers to, there’s friends and family that know him.

“There’s a lot of people leaving messages of sympathy.

“And there are other people who do a similar role to Trevor in other areas like Newcastle and Manchester, and they’ve donated as well.

“It’s just been really heartwarming to see people supporting him and the family in that way.”

Mr Dickinson said that the DPD staff in Carlisle are keen to do what they could support Mr Frith and his family.

“Everyone’s thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time. He’s greatly thought of at the depot. Everyone at the depot wants to give as much support as they can.”

A touching message left at the scene of the crash by a friend of Jodie-Anne said: “Words can’t describe how heartbroken I am, such a talented and amazing girl with so much potential and life left to live taken from us.

“Fly high my beautiful girl. Keep dancing up there with the angels. I will forever love you.”
