One of the UK’s oldest friendly societies has welcomed a new face to help coordinate its Carlisle activities.

The Oddfellows, set up in 1810 to help promote the forging of friendships, has appointed Wigton resident Linda Cooper as Carlisle’s new social organiser.

She will be taking the lead on coordinating the society’s social activities, such as lunches and coffee mornings at the Greystone Community Centre and the Cornerstone cafe in Denton Holme.

Joining in June, Linda was previously a community centre development officer in Workington.

Linda listed some of the new activities she plans to put on in the coming months.

“I’m always open to new event ideas which would appeal to people locally,” she said.

“I’m looking to put on additional activities throughout the year, such as a walking group, aquafit sessions, chair aerobics, day trips out, a scrabble and dominoes club, carpet bowls and lots more.

“We’re here for everyone, and always welcome new faces along to give our friendly group a try.

“If you’re nervous about coming, just get in touch so we can put you at ease and buddy you up with a regular until you find your feet.”

The next event being held by the Oddfellows in Carlisle is an American supper, taking place on Thursday, September 5, at the Greystone Community Centre.

The evening will be free to attend, and will include a light meal.

The event will begin at 7.30pm.

Those who want to come along will need to get in touch beforehand.

The event is being held as part of the Oddfellows’ annual awareness campaign, Friendship Month, which highlights the importance of socialising at all ages - something the Oddfellows society is keen to help people do.

A non-profit mutual society run by its members, the society can be joined for £25 per year.

The organisation has 314,000 members in the UK, across 124 branches found all over the country.
