The most famous – and hideous – competition in Cumbria is changing location this year, but the same outrageous show as ever is promised.

Egremont Crab Fair’s World Gurning Championships are to take place at the Falcon Club, having moved from the Market Hall. With the championships getting bigger each year, the organisers wanted to keep guests of all ages feeling welcome and entertained, so made the decision to move to the “much more family-friendly” venue.

A large function room and separate lounge area will now be provided for visitors, as well as an outdoor terrace, free parking, and plenty of food. And for the youngsters, a children’s entertainer will open the night on September 21, with The Voice runner-up Jolan performing between the traditional competitions and CFM’s Robbie Dee hosting the night.

Crab Fair secretary Daniel Shutt can’t wait for the much-loved event, and said: “People look forward to Crab Fair from one year to the next – it’s like a big party for the town! Everyone comes out to play that weekend. Everywhere you look there’s people having fun, the town comes to life.

“We always try to introduce something new, and this year we have the new Food Marquee on the sports field which will be jam-packed with traders from all over the county. The reintroduction of the sports will also be a real treat on the field, this includes grass track cycling and athletics.”

He added: “We could not do all this for free without our fantastic sponsors, so a special thanks to Wulfsport International for supporting this event.”
